The method

How to wear it

A single silk square is the most versatile thing in a wardrobe — and the most underused. Here are five reliable ways to wear one well, with the steps that make each look fall into place.

One square, many lives

The case for the 90cm silk square

Ninety centimetres is the quietly perfect size. Large enough to fold, roll, drape and wrap; small enough to knot tight without bulk. The same scarf can sit at your neck on Monday, hold your hair back on Tuesday, dress a bag on Wednesday and finish a jacket by the weekend. Once you know a few foundations, you stop owning scarves and start owning options.

None of this requires a tutorial-level skill. Each look below is three steps or fewer. Practise once in the mirror and it becomes muscle memory.

The Parisian neck-knot — a silk square styled as described
01

The Parisian neck-knot

The everyday classic — close to the throat, soft at the front, never fussy. It works open at the collar of a coat or over a plain crew neck.

  1. 1Fold the square corner to corner into a triangle, then roll it from the long edge toward the point into a soft band.
  2. 2Drape the band around your neck so the ends fall to the front, points roughly level.
  3. 3Cross the ends once, loop one through, and pull into a relaxed knot just off-centre. Nudge the folds until they sit the way you like.
The hair wrap / headscarf — a silk square styled as described
02

The hair wrap / headscarf

An instant transformation for second-day hair or a bright day out. The same square reads as 1960s Riviera or modern minimal depending on where you tie it.

  1. 1Open the square fully and fold it once into a triangle, long edge toward you.
  2. 2Lay the long edge along your hairline and take the two ends back behind your head.
  3. 3Tie at the nape for a clean headband, or knot on top for a turban-style finish. Tuck the trailing point under, or leave it loose for movement.
The bag twilly — a silk square styled as described
03

The bag twilly

The quickest way to refresh a bag you already love. A narrow silk square wound around the handle adds colour, protects the leather, and reads as deliberate.

  1. 1Roll the square tightly from corner to corner into a slim cord.
  2. 2Anchor one end at the base of the handle with a simple knot.
  3. 3Wind the cord evenly up the handle, then tie off at the top — leave the ends short and neat, or bow them for a softer look.
The waist tie / belt — a silk square styled as described
04

The waist tie / belt

A silk square belted through the loops turns a pair of trousers or a plain dress into something considered. It is the easiest way to bring print to the centre of an outfit.

  1. 1Roll a larger square into a wide band, or use a long wrap as is.
  2. 2Thread it through your belt loops, or simply wrap it once around the waist over a dress or high-waist trouser.
  3. 3Knot at the front or to one side and let the ends hang. Keep the band flat against the body for a clean line.
The pocket-square fold — a silk square styled as described
05

The pocket-square fold

For the tailored set — a pocket square is the smallest decision in a jacket and the one people notice. A soft, irregular fold always beats a stiff straight edge.

  1. 1Lay the square flat and pinch it at the centre, letting the corners fall.
  2. 2Gather the loose fabric loosely in your hand so the points fan upward.
  3. 3Fold the base under to the depth of your breast pocket and slip it in. Aim for a relaxed bloom of fabric, not a sharp line.
Make it last

Caring for silk

Treated kindly, a silk square keeps its colour and drape for years. A few habits are all it takes.

  1. 01Hand wash cold, alone, with a gentle pH-neutral detergent — never wring or twist.
  2. 02Or dry clean. When in doubt with a printed silk, dry cleaning is the safest route.
  3. 03Do not bleach, and keep silk away from perfume and hairspray, which can mark the dye.
  4. 04Iron on the reverse on a cool, silk setting while slightly damp — never directly on the print.
  5. 05Store flat or loosely rolled, out of direct sunlight, so colours stay true for years.
